Clarence G. LeClair was born in Burlington, Vermont on 27 May 1906, the son of George and Clara (Hatin) LeClair. He attended Nazareth Grade School and Cathedral High School. His mother passed away when he was 17. He moved in with his grandparents and worked several jobs to support his brother and 3 sisters.
He owned and operated the Champlain Beverage Company until he retired. He served on the Burlington School Board from 1954 to 1956 and was a Burlington Alderman for 15 years from 1956 to 1973. He was the Board of Alderman President from 1960 to 1965. He was also a member of the Vermont House of Representatives for 11 years from 1966 to 1977 serving on the Ways and Means Committee. He also served as the Burlington Police Commissioner for one year from 1977 to 1978.
Clarence was very active in the Boy Scouts of America, serving as Chairman of the Camping and Activities Committee, and was awarded Scouting's two highest medals. He was a member of the executive board of the Long Trails Council for many years. Clarence also served as a member of the Board of Directors for the Burlington Boys Club 793, member of St Joseph’Äôs Parish, Post President of the St Joseph’Äôs Holy Name Society, member of the Confraternity of St Joseph's, and was a member of many social and religious organizations in the Burlington area.
Clarence was a dedicated family man. He was the center of family life and planned many activities to keep his large family close. He was survived by his third wife, two sons; four daughters, eighteen grandchildren, five step-grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren; one brother, and two sisters.
